"THE VANISHING IRISH": THE IMPACT OF EMIGRATION
FROM IRELAND: CURSE OR BLESSING?

Emigration has been central to the Irish experience for nearly 200 years. This lecture takes a provocative look back at what this has meant and how it has been interpreted over the decades; the controversies, the feelings of displacement, the anger, the hopes and the key issues of who was deemed to be responsible, how the emigrants were characterised and what their departure meant for them and those they left behind. Has emigration been a blessing, a curse or both? And is it just economic circumstances that have led to people emigrating or are there other reasons? Just how justified is the idea of emigration as “a lifestyle choice”?
